When the kids got up this morning, they were so excited that Halloween was finally here. Aidan was ready to put on his costume as soon as he woke up, which was totally fine with me. He thought that meant we'd go trick or treating too. He didn't want breakfast; he wanted to go trick or treating. The child comes by his sweet tooth so honestly, it's almost sad. It nearly overpowers him at times. :) I finally convinced him that no one would be home to give out treats until it was almost dark out, and he decided he would eat breakfast.
We decided to take a trip to the mall and play for the morning, and they all went in costume...until we walked in and they wanted to take them off. Oh well, so much for cute pumpkins climbing around. Nana and Aunt Maureen joined us for lunch, which was such a treat! They had a great time, and Aidan decided he would sacrifice his mandatory mall cookie in order to trick or treat. Amazingly enough, they all took a nap despite the excitement.
When dusk finally rolled in, they were very ready to go. Jason and I got dressed up as a scarecrow and black cat, respectively. The kids thought that was great, except Aidan who did not like my costume. Emory was being a real pistol (what a shock), and I really didn't think she was going to handle trick or treating. I envisioned pretty much missing out on Aidan and Alanna's first trick or treating experience to keep her at home. Somehow, going door to door getting candy really lifted her spirits. (again...not too shocking.) Alanna picked up on the routine without batting an eyelash...She practically said "trick or treat" as soon as the door cracked open, and I don't think I had to remind her to say "thank you" once. The kids all had a great time trick or treating, and they were especially happy to get home and partake in the goodies. We sat on the front stoop and had some chocolate candy. Surprisingly, they fell asleep pretty quickly despite the sugar intake just before bedtime. Alanna asked if I'd still have a black nose and whiskers in the morning, and she looked a little sad when I said "no." She enjoyed wearing my ears and tail today.
When they woke up this morning, they wanted candy for breakfast...
So we finally got around to carving our pumpkins this morning, and Grandma and Grandpa joined us for the fun. Everyone had a good time, and Alanna and Emory helped scoop out the seeds and pulp. Aidan, on the other hand, was not too keen on that idea. Lots more photos are on our flickr site....www.flickr.com/photos/katzkiddos. You'll have to sign up for an account if you haven't already.

Some friends recently lent us a little pumpkin costume for Emory to wear, and as soon as Aidan and Alanna saw it, they decided they needed to be pumpkins too. This will actually be their first Halloween celebration, outside of carving pumpkins and reading Halloween books. Anyway, I promptly purchased two more pumpkin costumes, and we will collectively be a pumpkin patch for Halloween. In fact, the children decided that Jason would be a scarecrow, and I would be a black cat. Perfect accessories for a pumpkin patch, right?
Photos to come...
Today we went to the pumpkin patch. It was opening weekend, and although it was Saturday, the pumpkin patch was not crowded at all. It was a beautiful day, and Aidan, Alanna and Emory had a great time finding their way through the hay maze, going through a tunnel under a huge haystack, picking cotton, feeding some goats, and choosing their very own pumpkins. We met Farmer Ganyard and thanked him for giving us this experience for the last three years. We had planned to have a picnic at the pumpkin patch, but the weather was a little cool and all the tables were in the shade. Since the kids said they were cold, they settled for a faux picnic on a blanket in our family room. The pumpkins are set out on our front steps awaiting carving (assuming they don't spoil first!)
